A to Z Agenda

A is for Agenda.

Wow, that’s a super exciting way to start my Blogging from A to Z Challenge adventures.  I’m sure it will bring new visitors zipping back to my blog each day absolutely drooling in anticipation.  Okay, how about this instead?

A is for Awesome Agenda Allowing Amazing Adventures!1!1!1!

Yep, that’s obviously much better.  I know this because it has rainbow colors.

This boring start is no April Fools’ joke; it’s because April 1st is the odd man out – the only Sunday in the bunch – so it doesn’t follow my planned agenda.  But since agenda actually starts with A, it made sense to use this random Sunday to outline my plan of attack.

For the past month, I dithered back and forth about whether to go with a theme or not (just one of my many patented procrastination methods).  I was worried about losing focus without a theme, but I worried about getting burned out or bored if I did have one.  So as a compromise, I’ve decided to go with themed days of the week, which will give me both structure and variety.  And since I always love alliteration, I used it to  guide my theme picks.

Here’s the plan for the rest of the month:

Movie Monday – I’ll talk about the lesser-known movies I've found on Netflix Watch Instantly because of their spookily accurate recommendation ratings.

Tips Tuesday – I’ll share some tips about grammar and writing.

Willy-nilly Wednesday – This is my random day to have fun with whatever inspires me.

Television Thursday – I’ll wax poetic about television shows I’ve enjoyed.

Film Friday – I’ll present a few short films.  And since I’m usually so focused on words, these will be animated films that don’t use a single word of dialog to tell their stories.

Short Story Saturday – I’ll write a piece of flash fiction where the genre and other items in the story fit the letter of the day.

Now if you saw my ABCDogs video for the A to Z video challenge, you might be wondering how this plan fits with my promise of a daily dose of adorable doggies. Well, the five Rish family dogs graciously agreed (after being bribed with tons of treats) to pose with each letter of the day.  So even if a post ends up being boring (I’m looking at you, A for Agenda), then you’ll still have a cute canine to add a smile to your day.

Freya with the letter A

This is my first A to Z challenge, and I’m really excited about this month of insane blogging and meeting new blogger friends.

Do you have a theme or are you going random?  How did you decide?  Any thoughts on my theme days?  How Adorable is Freya with her letter A?

Hi Jocelyn, I am on the other side of the world, Malaysia to be exact. Good start, and looking forward to more!

This is me, Duncan D. Horne, visiting you from the A-Z challenge, wishing you all the best throughout April and beyond.

Wow, Malaysia!  I've always wanted to visit there.  And all the best to you too!

Hi, sounds very interesting and a lovely dog everyday what more could we ask for? I'm doing sixties and seventies memories and some letters are proving difficult but I'm sure inspiration will come eventually.

Jocelyn Rish's picture

I'll seize any chance to show off the family dogs.  :-)  Sixties and seventies memories is an unusual theme - looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Great start. Love the dog pic!

I do have a theme but it allows me to go random. Words of 10 letters or more from an old book but most people won't find that out till D for dictionary. Oops *spoiler* ;)

I see Duncan got here before me! He's just read 50!

Thanks, I think she's a cutie!  Oh, big words as your theme?  Me likey!  And that's cool that it both gives you something to focus on, while letting you explore.

Kimberlee Turley's picture

No theme for me. It's a struggle enough as it is to think of a topic for each letter let alone having them all coordinated.

Sounds like you've got a love of TV/movies you like. I'm always amazed at the writers who find time to watch shows and hone their craft. I've got so many great books I want to read I can't imagine finding time to sit down and watch TV too.

The problem with reading and TV is that it's hard to do two things at once since they're both heavily visually oriented.

Jocelyn Rish's picture

I do love TV/movies and reading, and unfortunately my writing really suffers because of it.  No self control I tell you!!  But it's something I'm really trying to work on by whittling down the time I spend watching.  At least with reading I can justify it as part of my homework for being a writer. :-)

So, obviously you have an agenda... ;-)

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Yep, an agenda to have fun and meet lots of new bloggers! :-)

Janna's picture

Sounds like an ambitious agenda. I like how you're structuring your posts. I could use a little structure.

BTW, Freya is such a great name for your dog!

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Yeah, I'm a little worried I might have bitten off more than I can chew, but I'll have fun trying.

Thanks - I've always loved Norse myths.

Hello, Fellow Challenger, from #424-Rockin'Chair Reflections! I like the dog ending idea. I'm free-wheeling, this year, and look forward to some of your structured postings. Come visit when you can.

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Since this was my first year, I was nervous about free-wheeling it, but now I'm worried about feeling locked in.  Hope you have fun with it!

Valued Visitor's picture

This gave me a chuckle. You make a random list and pretend it's an agenda. Especially willy-nilly Wednesday. And the dog is adorable. What a good (can't tell so I'll go with ) boy.

Jocelyn Rish's picture

I'm all about compromise, so I'm hoping a little bit of structure that also gives room for being random will get me through the month.  :-)  And my dog is a lady, although a very silly one.

Your dog is so cute! I'm looking forward to more posts. Your agenda is ambitious, I think.

Me, I'm presenting lovingly researched facts and tidbits that I will use as story prompts for the Story a Day in May challenge. A-Z doesn't scare me because writing a story a day really does.

Thanks!  She's a silly little (or rather big) girl.

I hadn't heard about the Story a Day challenge. That sounds like a lot of fun!  Uh oh - I don't need more things to tempt me away from working on my WIP.  :-)

KarenG's picture

What a good idea to have a different theme for each day of the week!
My theme this year is the Making and Selling of Books.

I'm here to say hi and welcome you to the Challenge!

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Thanks - I hope it works!  Yours sounds like a solid plan - I'm looking forward to seeing what you do for some of the trickier letters.

Donna McNicol's picture

I like your structure...will be fun to follow. I'm doing flash fiction, words picked at random, photos found to inspire, then max of 10 sentences and min of 100 words. I love that there are so many different approaches to the A to Z.

BTW, I'm picking out one commenter at random and adding them to my list to follow. Too many to do otherwise...

Jocelyn Rish's picture

I can't imagine doing flash fiction every day - just once a week is making me nervous!  Best of luck to you!

Lee's picture

Great ideas! I'm looking forward to the month.
I'm still in a fiction frenzy so will just enjoy reading yours...good luck this month!
Lee

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Thanks, Lee!  And congrats again on your recent publication!

Sheenah Freitas's picture

It's my first year doing this challenge, too! I sort of signed up at the last minute, so I don't have a theme, but I love the schedule that you have planned out. Looking forward to seeing your posts!

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Thanks, I'm hoping the schedule works out how I planned.  I signed up a while back, but I managed to procrastinate away all the time I could have been stockpiling blog posts.  Best of luck to you!

Tia Bach's picture

I love your ideas, and I'm looking forward to reading your A to Z posts (and seeing your dogs featured!). Hope you have tons of fun with it.

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Thanks!  The dogs have been... less than cooperative about having their pictures taken, but I can't wait to show them off in all their silliness.

michelle's picture

This sounds like a great approach to the challenge!
Lots of variety which will ensure that you never grow bored during the challenge!
I'm going with a musically-related fiction theme... short posts!

Jocelyn Rish's picture

I hope you're right about my approach!

Music and fiction together sounds very ambitious.  But short posts are definitely the key to this.  Unfortunately, I've always been very wordy!  :-)

John Holton's picture

Great idea for the A to Z Challenge! I've enjoyed what you've done so far. My theme is the NATO spelling alphabet: alpha, bravo, Charlie etc.

Jocelyn Rish's picture

Thank you!  I really like the idea of using the NATO alphabet as your theme.
